Assessing Consequences of Maternal Immunization on Foetal Outcomes
9–10 June 2026 | Zurich, Switzerland
IABS Scientific Workshop 2026
Vaccination during pregnancy has historically been approached with caution due to concerns about potential adverse effects on the foetus. In recent years, however, robust clinical evidence has demonstrated the benefits of maternal immunization in protecting both pregnant women and their infants against infectious diseases such as tetanus, pertussis, influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
At the same time, questions remain regarding the safety assessment of vaccines administered during pregnancy, particularly in relation to preterm birth and other foetal outcomes. Carefully designed clinical and observational studies, supported by rigorous statistical methodologies, are essential to inform balanced benefit–risk evaluations.
This IABS Scientific Workshop aims to advance methodological approaches for assessing the safety of maternal vaccines, with specific attention to their potential impact on gestational age and preterm birth.
Scope and objectives
The workshop will:
-
Examine current evidence on maternal immunization and foetal outcomes
-
Discuss methodological challenges in evaluating safety signals in interventional and observational studies
-
Address clinical and statistical approaches to assessing gestational age and preterm birth
-
Explore benefit–risk considerations in the context of emerging maternal vaccines (e.g. RSV, Group B Streptococcus, mRNA candidates)
-
Promote dialogue on standardized approaches for safety assessment
Particular attention will be given to lessons learned from recent RSV vaccine trials, regulatory considerations, and real-world implementation data.
By bringing together experts from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies, the event aims to foster multidisciplinary dialogue and contribute to harmonized methodologies for evaluating maternal vaccine safety.
