Virtual Meeting – Regulatory Science Conference
Bovine Serum: challenges and opportunities in the research and development and manufacture of vaccines and other biological products
About the event
Bovine serum, particularly foetal bovine serum (FBS), remains a critical starting material in the manufacture of many biological medicinal products, especially vaccines for both human and veterinary use. It is also widely used in research and development across academia and industry.
At the same time, the sourcing and use of bovine serum face increasing regulatory, supply and technical challenges. These include contamination risks, evolving international regulations, variability in testing methods and concerns about potential supply shortages.
The meeting will bring together regulatory authorities, serum producers, biological product manufacturers, academia and public health officials to discuss the current regulatory landscape, supply challenges and technical considerations related to bovine serum and potential alternatives.
Key topics
- Supply constraints and availability
- Regulatory requirements
- Gamma irradiation efficiency
- Contamination risks, including BVDV
- BSE
- Perspectives from regulatory agencies and industry
The meeting aims to foster dialogue on regulations and guidance that can help safeguard the supply of vaccines and other biological products while maintaining their safety, and to promote collaborative solutions at the international level.
